Nitric oxide: supplements and nutrition
The quest for better blood flow to the muscles (resulting in better oxygenation, nutrient supply etc.) is the goal of any sportsman. Nitric oxide plays a fundamental role, and to this end, one looks for a diet and supplements that can increase its presence in the blood.
Nitric oxide can act on mitochondrial function at different levels. Due to its vasodilating properties, it regulates blood flow to the tissues; thus, indirectly, it provides respiratory substrates to the mitochondria and redistributes the heat generated by mitochondrial respiration.
In the body, nitric oxide synthesis is a (fundamental) product of NO synthase, the process of breaking down and synthesising the essential amino acid arginine (through the use of citrulline etc.), via the nitric oxide synthase (NOS) group of enzymes.
What to eat and what supplements to improve nitric oxide levels.
The common dietary strategy is to increase consumption of leafy vegetables containing natural nitrates; while arginine and citrulline can be found in nuts, pumpkin and lentils. The consumption one needs to make to experience their benefits is, however, quite high.
Sprintade®‘s solution was to rethink one of our historical supplements: Nitred®. The new Nitred® format allows for frequent consumption during training. Nitred® Saline Supplement is our new solution for all athletes, not just endurance athletes. It allows you to make flasks with different compound concentrations, fulfilling both the function of a salt and carbohydrate supplement (with a modest energy intake so you can freely decide how many calories to take) as well as providing natural nitrates and citrulline.
Effect of salt and carbohydrate supplements on sports performance
The effects of carbohydrate supplements taken during sports performance have been confirmed by many studies and reviews (we have discussed them in many articles). Saline supplements, on the other hand, can ensure the correct functioning of motor impulses, preventing cramps, excessive loss of fluid (with a dangerous increase in body temperature) and become really important when the atmospheric temperature rises, as in summer. Replenishing carbohydrates allows the body to draw on its primary source of energy without depleting amino acid reserves (the body is not able to break down fat quickly enough to use it during a performance, it will rather choose the leucine present in the muscle).
The natural power of Red Beet and Rosehip.
Red Beet (Beta Vulgaris) also known as Red Beta and Red Turnip is a vegetable belonging to the Chenopodiaceae family. We have talked about its benefits in many articles here on Sprintade.it, because Red Beet extract is truly amazing at supporting athletes of all types. Here are 9 reasons why we chose to include Red Beard in Nitred®
- Rich in antioxidants: Fights oxidative stress and protects cells.
- Improves cardiovascular health: Natural nitrates help improve blood circulation and reduce blood pressure.
- Supports liver function: Betaine contributes to liver health and helps prevent fat accumulation.
- Anti-inflammatory action: Reduces inflammation in the body.
- Boosts the immune system: High content of essential vitamins and minerals.
- Promotes digestion: Rich in fibre, which helps intestinal regularity.
- Supports brain health: Nitrates can improve blood flow to the brain.
- Promotes weight loss: Low calorie, high fibre content promotes satiety.
- Improves athletic performance: Nitrates improve mitochondrial efficiency, increasing energy and endurance.
Rosehip, on the other hand, is rich in vitamin C, antioxidants and bioactive compounds that support the immune system, fight free radicals and reduce inflammation. It is known to improve skin health by promoting collagen production and reducing signs of ageing. In addition, rosehip can alleviate arthritis symptoms due to its anti-inflammatory properties and promote good digestion by improving intestinal flora.
Betaine: friend of athletes
Betaine, found in foods such as red beetroot, offers numerous health benefits. It acts as a methyl donor, aiding in the detoxification of homocysteine, a compound that, in excess, can damage blood vessels. Betaine supports liver function and has lipotropic properties, promoting the removal of fats from the liver. In addition, it has neuroprotective effects and may help improve mood, being a precursor of S-adenosylmethionine, a substance with antidepressant effects.
The perfect combo: Citrulline and Nitrates
The natural nitrates found in red beetroot are compounds which, when ingested, are converted to nitric oxide (NO) in the body. Nitric oxide is a powerful vasodilator that relaxes and dilates blood vessels, improving blood flow and reducing blood pressure. This process helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to muscles and organs more efficiently, supporting cardiovascular health and improving physical and mental performance
Citrulline is an amino acid found in some foods, such as watermelon, and is known for its benefits in sports. When combined with red beetroot, which is rich in natural nitrates, it can significantly improve athletic performance. Citrulline increases nitric oxide levels in the blood, improving blood flow and oxygen supply to the muscles. This reduces fatigue and increases endurance during physical activity. Together, citrulline and red beet enhance recovery capacity and overall athletic performance.
